how does hyundai's Smartstream IVT differ from a traditional CVT

I've been looking into Hyundai's Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) and I'm really curious about how it stacks up against the more traditional Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). I know that both are meant to deliver smooth acceleration and better fuel efficiency, but what makes the Smartstream IVT stand out

I'm particularly keen to learn about the mechanical differences between IVT and CVT, how the driving experience compares, and any information on reliabiltiy or maintenance issues

If anyone has any real-world experience or technical knowledge about Hyundai's Smartstream IVT, I would love to hear your thoughts

Read somewhere that he Smartstream IVT is Hyundai's improved version of a CVT. The big difference is that it uses a chain belt instead of the traditional push belt found in many CVTs.

Hyundai says this design helps with a few things where it has better reliability and longer lifespan, improved fuel efficiency and the driving feel is more smoother and responsive.

As much as reliability so far looks good enough I'd still do a fluid change around 60K to 90K miles just to be safe but overall, it's a nice balance between performance and efficiency in my opinion

Smartstream IVT is definitely an upgrade over the usual CVTs. It reduces slippage and enhances responsiveness. Plus, with its simulated shift points, it gives you a driving experience that's closer to a traditional automatic. I had the chance to drive one in an Elantra, and for the most part, it was really smooth. However, I did notice a bit of a shudder at low speeds every so often. A software update or switching out of "smart" mode usually fixed it.

Yeah, I agree. The Smartstream IVT is better than CVTs. It feels more responsive and doesn't slip as much.
